Pogroszewski to Present ‘Jock Tax Index’ at Analytics Conference
St. John Fisher College Associate Professor and AFP Consulting President, Alan Pogroszewski has been selected as a poster presenter at the 2015 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference (SSAC). Pogroszewski’s paper entitled MLB Jock Tax Index: Quantifying the Monetary Value in After-Tax Dollars, was selected as one of twenty finalist in the Research Paper Competition and will be displayed at the conference on Thursday February 27th and Friday February 28th.
Pogroszewski’s paper outlines the Jock Tax Index (JTI), which ranks each of the 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams according to the federal, resident and nonresident state and city income tax liability based on their home and away schedule and puts this information into a usable index. It gives a player, team and agent a practical way to evaluate how the tax burden for each team’s players compares to the 29 other teams in MLB. The JTI measures how much a team’s location dictates the tax burden on an athlete because of the jurisdiction’s income tax policies and allows individuals to compare the net take home income after tax liabilities and credits of any contract proposal between competing offers from different tax jurisdictions. The JTI is a new proprietary tool Pogroszewski created and has also been featured on Bloomberg Television’s Market Crashers.
In the paper Pogroszewski outlines the JTI and then uses it to analyze Jon Lester’s new contract with the Chicago Cubs. In using the JTI, Pogroszewski illustrates how team location and playing schedule effected the amount of tax liability a player would be subjected. The end results in Lester’s case indicated that the Chicago Cubs offered him the best net value while the Los Angeles Dodgers would have needed to pay a $13,302,044.98 premium in order to offer the same after tax value.
The MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference provides a forum to discuss the role of analytics in the sport industry. An annual event, this marks the ninth year for the conference which provides a forum for industry professionals (executives and leading researchers), students, and fans to discuss the increasing role of analytics in the sports industry. The SSAC is one of the largest student run conferences in the country and has become the premier venue for sports analytics discussion.Alan Pogroszewski, jock tax, Jock Tax Index, Jon Lester, MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference
